Set around a small country community in the North of Ireland, Small Engine Repair is the story of a group of men going nowhere. Doug thinks he`s a country singer, but he`s too old and only half-arsed, carrying around a demo he won`t let anyone hear.
He daydreams of being heard on the local radio station, or playing his mate`s bar to prove to local doubters he has some worth. His best friend is a worn-out mechanic, a hapless loser desperate to persuade his son not to leave the family business, the small engine repair shop of the title.
Niall Heery`s debut feature is a deeply affecting character study, a subtly original portrait of male vulnerability, his characters so human in their failings and weaknesses that they ring true. The film revels in an atmosphere of hopeless romanticism, and the themes of boozing, death, cheating women and broken hearts are underlined perfectly by the songs Doug sings and the excellent country soundtrack.
