Brazilian by birth and, especially, temperament, Vinicius (1913-1980) embodies the open-minded, literature-loving, cosmopolitan sensibility associated with the swinging Rio de Janeiro of the 40s, 50s and 60s. He lived large, loved a lot (he married nine times), drank prodigiously, was generous to a fault and produced a body of work, including hundreds of poems and songs, that struck an enduring chord with not only his contemporaries, but the generations that have followed. And he did so while maintaining a day job as a diplomat for much of his life.
Faria Jr. more than does justice to Vinicius, the man and the legend, by fashioning a film that is as in love with life as its subject was. Showcasing many great musical performances, Faria Jr. exuberantly traces Vinicius` growth as artist and cosmopolitan through interviews with his contemporaries and ex-wives interspersed with archival footage of Rio in its heyday. As a portrait of artist as man and man as artist, Vinicius, like its subject, has few recent rivals.
