Set in 1938 Colonial India, against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi`s rise to power, this film begins when eight-year-old Chuyia is sent to an ashram where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Ranging in age from 18 to 80, with their heads shaven and wearing only coarse white saris, these women subsist on one daily meal and prayer while they patiently wait for death. The arrival of the indefatigable Chuyia, who will not readily submit to her fate, immediately impacts the lives of the other residents, including the ashram`s corpulent matriarch Madhumati and the spiritually conflicted Shakuntala. Chuyia becomes fast friends with Kalyani, a beautiful young widow who has retained her long hair so that she can be "of service" to Madhumati. When the girls meet Narayan, an idealist and follower of Gandhi`s "Quit India Movement," their lives are forever changed.
